Propane (R290) has no impact on the greenhouse effect, has similar pressure levels and refrigeration power ranges as the well-known R22 and is used since many years as a refrigerant for refrigeration installations or for heat pumps.
As propane hasn't any corrosive effect against copper and aluminium, many components are made out of this raw material. It also allows the operation with hermetic and half-hermetic compressors. However, the high incentivity of propane, requires additional precautionary measures. (Ex-security).
Generally, propane could be used everywhere, where today is used R22. In some countries, especially in Asia, propane is used as drop-in. Industrial companies, being used to the handling with inflammable substances, were always recommended to use propane as a refrigerant; often with some tons of filing capacity.
Frigo-Consulting used propane as refrigerant within process cooling (cold water installations) and for sub-cooling gas cooler's output of transcritical CO2-installations in climatic hot regions (e.g. South of Spain). Not unmentioned should remain the fact, that even air condition installations have been put in place successfully.
